Start to really looking at rates about 6 weeks out. If they don’t drop in price over the next two weeks (nearing the 4 week window), they’re likely at the lowest price already. If it’s still too much, you might want to try an auction-type site like Priceline.

Don't count on it. Airlines don't offer standby fares. And, flights average more than 80% full.

In reality, buying a ticket at the airport is usually the most expensive possible way to travel. You don't qualify for an advance purchase discount. The number of discount seats is limited per flight, so there is a good chance that none will be available with average load factors of over 80%.

As another person noted, you may be subject to extra security checks if you pay with cash at the airport at the last minute.

Not having a credit card is no problem. Travel websites commonly accept debit cards. If all else fails, you can pay cash at a travel agent. Yes, they will charge a service fee but so does the airline when you buy a ticket at the airport.

Editorial comment on "Iamsaved34"'s rant about Spirit Airlines. Yes, it's true that Spirit charges extra for everything and has lousy service. That's how they can have lower fares than everyone else. However, the accusation that their planes are very old and belonged to ValuJet is just plain wrong. In reality, Spirit has one of the youngest fleets in the country. Their average aircraft is less than four years old. They currently fly an all-Airbus fleet and Valujet never operated any Airbus aircraft.

There may be good reasons to avoid Spirit, but "old former Valujet aircraft" is not a valid one.

All three will search multiple sites for the best deal. I can usually find the best deal by searching through these sites, tehn booking directly with the airline's website (saves you booking fees etc).

With Delta having a major hub in ATL, you might find the best success with them.

Jetblue also flies into Burlington, but I see they don't fly out of ATL yet. The closet to you is Jacksonville, FL. They sometimes have some really cheap fares.

you just need to search as many sites as possible. for flights, there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely give you the best prices available. just go here: http://cheapest-travel-ever.info/xhpp and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it's very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online… otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.

i won’t fly until the fares are reasonable again and i’m not charged for carry on or checked luggage, allowed to bring my bottled water or juice aboard and not have to buy a cup of filthy airline tap water or argue with the agitated disturbed in the head flight attendants why i’m asking for refill the 8oz styrofoam cup because i just had one and i have to choke on my home-made meal because i’m not allowed to be thirsty and ask for refills. FUCK THAT!!! and when will checkpoint humiliation end?!
